The species is native to India.

Canola flowers can self-pollinate, and they can also be cross-pollinated by insects and by wind.­

Brassica species can contain erucic acid and various glucosinolates, which can be toxic. However, commercial canola varieties have been bred to reduce the levels of these substances. Canola may contain elevated levels of tannins, which reduce the digestibility of seed protein, and sinapine, which is a bitter substance that can reduce the palatability of feeds made from canola meal.

Occupational exposure to pollen and seed flour have been associated with allergic reactions in humans. There are no known allergic reactions to canola oil.

Aspergillus niger PhyA

A. niger is less likely to cause human disease than some other Aspergillus species. In extremely rare instances, humans may become ill, but this is due to a serious lung disease, aspergillosis, that can occur. Aspergillosis is, in particular, frequent among horticultural workers who inhale peat dust, which can be rich in Aspergillus spores. A. niger is one of the most common causes of otomycosis (fungal ear infections), which can cause pain, temporary hearing loss, and, in severe cases, damage to the ear canal and tympanic membrane.

Escherichia coli (K-12) nptII

Escherichia coli is one of a number of microorganisms which are normal inhabitants of the colons of virtually all warm-blooded mammals. Ecoli belongs to the taxonomic family known asEnterobacteriaceae, which is one of the best-defined groups of bacteria. The strain Ecoli K-12 is a debilitated strain which does not normally colonize the human intestine. It has also been shown to survive poorly in the environment, has a history of safe commercial use, and is not known to have adverse effects on microorganisms or plants.

Characteristics of the Modification Expand

Five lines (originating from 4 different T2 sub-lines) were selected for further study. The five lines were renumbered as MPS961 to PS965. Note that MPS961, MPS963 and MPS964 contain the same phytase insert (MPS963 and MPS964 originating from the same T2 sub-line) and that MPS962 and MPS965 contain the two other inserts of the primary transformant.
